Questions walkers ask
How many calories do 10,000 steps burn?
Typically 300–500 calories. A 150 lb (68 kg) person of average height walking at a normal pace burns about 350; a 200 lb (91 kg) person closer to 470. Faster walking and hills add more.
How many calories per step?
Roughly 0.03–0.06 calories per step for most adults — about 1 calorie for every 20–30 steps. Heavier people burn more per step.
How many calories do 5,000 steps burn?
About half of the 10,000-step figure: roughly 150–250 calories for most adults.
Where did 10,000 steps come from?
It began as a 1960s Japanese pedometer brand, manpo-kei ("10,000-step meter"). Later research, such as Paluch et al. in The Lancet Public Health (2022), found mortality benefits levelling off at around 6,000–8,000 steps a day for adults over 60 and 8,000–10,000 for younger adults.
